ALBANY, NY — A new audit says former Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration underestimated the number of COVID deaths of New York City nursing home residents by the thousands.
State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said the public had been misled by people at the highest levels of government.
His auditors found that the state health department had underreported the number of deaths by at least 4,100, and sometimes the numbers were underreported by up to 50%.
The audit found that the Health Department had underestimated the number of deaths because Cuomo, his executive staff and a task force took control of the information provided to the public.
A spokesperson for the former governor told CBS2 in a statement: “As the number of deaths outside the facility was reported last January, this is not news, but strangely enough, it is the Comptroller’s release of this audit now – but no one has ever accused him of being above politics.”
