Houston County nursing home catches fire

ERIN, Tenn. (WKRN) – An investigation is underway after a fire Friday morning at a Houston County nursing home.

The fire started at Signature Healthcare, located on Rocky Hollow Road, around 5am. A patient was taken to a Nashville hospital with serious injuries and later died. In addition, 16 patients were treated by first responders or assessed for smoke inhalation.

The Houston County Sheriff’s Department reported that between 30 and 35 residents were being evacuated from the facility to the gymnasium at Erin Elementary School. Fifteen to 20 residents are in wheelchairs, and Houston County schools provide special buses to move patients. Residents of the undamaged portion of the facility may remain on the premises until they can be transferred to a partner facility.

Sheriff Sugg reported that some emergency personnel responding to the fire also needed treatment, possibly for smoke inhalation.

The fire was contained to the west end of the building, according to the sheriff’s department and the cause of the fire is under investigation. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was called in to help with the investigation.

The Houston County Fire Department asked the public to avoid the area if possible.
